Coronado Island Young Life, Impacting Lives And Improving Our Community

Posted: Thursday, June 13, 2019 2:45 pm

Coronado Island youth have been part of a life-changing year. The scope is significant; Young Life has a presence in all 50 states and more than 100 countries around the globe. Locally, over 30 trained leaders invest in our youth on a weekly basis. Coronado’s leaders build bridges to turf and culture of community youth, building bridges of authentic friendship. Relationships like this don’t happen overnight – they take time, patience, trust and consistency.

Between weekly Club gatherings, Campaigner groups and Bagels & Bibles, over 250 Coronado High School students participated in Young Life during this school year. The number of involved Middle school students increased dramatically as well. Over 150 middle school students engaged in weekly activities and events centering around relationships and fun. Most importantly, in a world saturated with hardship, Coronado youth were affirmed of their value, worth and purpose as they learned about a relationship with Jesus Christ.

The impact of Young Life wouldn’t be possible were it not for the support of many generous supporters. One local mom saw the impact that Young Life had on her own son and decided to take action. Local favorite, Sue Shirey passionately shares her message with us all: “Do not waste your pain. From tragedy we can create awareness, compassion and love and make our communities better.” Following the passing of her beloved son, James, Sue chose to create an annual event in his honor.

The Sixth Annual James Party held on March 10, 2019 was a sold out event hosted at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club. Guests enjoyed a silent auction, a tasty dinner and an entertaining live auction. One special auction item was a Gourmet Dinner Party hosted in the beautiful home of Scott and Wanda Aurich. Blue Bridge Hospitality Chef Matt Saramek treated guests to an exquisite spread featuring delectable food and wine pairings. All are invited to save the date: the next Annual James Party will take place on March 1, 2020.

Thanks to the success of the 2019 James Party, Coronado Island Young Life received $45,000 which will help to create an opportunity to continue supporting Coronado Island youth. Looking forward, what is on the horizon? This summer, over 75 youth will attend camp – most calling it “the best week of their lives.” Young Life and Wyldlife is open to all youth in Coronado. Leaders are busy planning for the launch of the new school year as they work to support youth in a dynamic way. Parents and community members are encouraged to follow in the steps of Sue Shirey and get involved in supporting what they believe in. Become part of Coronado Young Life.
