The Coronado Floral Association’s annual kick-off dinner for the 2015 Coronado Flower Show will be held Wednesday, March 25 at the Coronado Golf Course. The event is entitled “Victory Celebration!” in honor of the “lost years” when the Flower Show, established in 1922, went dark due to the World War II war efforts.

The no-host social hour is at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. The Coronado Victory Celebration is $40 per person for Coronado Floral Association members and $60 for the general public. Reservations can be mailed to Coronado Floral Association, PO Box 180188, Coronado, CA 92178 (and can include membership fees as well). RSVPs are requested by March 23.

Membership in the Coronado Floral Association is $25 for two people and provides entrance into the Flower Show on both days and can be purchased online at coronadofloralassociation.com

Dinner entertainment will include an “Andrews Sister” tribute band, the “Sweethearts of Swing.” The Janet Hammer Duo will sing popular songs of the 1940s era, such as “The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B,” “I’ll Be Seeing You” and “As Time Goes By.” Attendees are encouraged to dress in World War II fashions, uniforms and hats. Souvenir pictures can be taken with the women in the ensemble.

“It’s so appropriate that we salute these ‘lost years’ when the Flower Show wasn’t held due to the war effort.” said Anna Paul, Floral Association Vice President and event organizer.  “It was a time when many Coronado residents planted vegetable gardens to provide food for their own tables when produce was rationed. These were called Victory Gardens.”

Table centerpieces will reflect the Victory Garden theme, filled with a cornucopia of vegetables. The buffet dinner will feature barbecued pork ribs and teriyaki chicken, fancy baked beans, corn and fresh corn bread.

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Coronado Flower Show, which is financed by the Coronado Floral Association and the City of Coronado. All proceeds from the event will support the Flower Show, which will be held the weekend of April 18 and 19. The theme is “The Crown City: Cultivating Our Past.” This event is staffed completely by volunteers, including members of the city’s two garden clubs: Crown Garden Club and Bridge and Bay Garden Club.
