Often listed among the greatest films of all time, Coronado Island Film Festival will present the 1959 American thriller, “North by Northwest,” directed by the legendary Alfred Hitchcock and starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason, on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Perfectly timed to provide a fun, pre-Thanksgiving family outing, the film will screen at 5 p.m. at Coronado’s Village Theatre, 820 Orange Ave.

All tickets are $10, and are on sale now at the theater box office. Early lineup is recommended for best seat selection; doors will open at 4:30 p.m.

The film received three Oscar nominations: Best Art Direction, Best Film Editing, and a Best Original Screenplay nod for writer Ernest Lehman, who set out to write “the Hitchcock picture to end all Hitchcock pictures.”

“North by Northwest” tells the story of a New York City advertising executive (Grant) who is mistakenly identified as a government agent by a group of foreign spies, setting off a 2000 mile hot pursuit across the United States. Who can ever forget the nail-biter scene where Cary Grant runs for his life through cornfields on a remote country road as he is pursued by a barrage of bullets shot at him from a crop-dusting airplane?

Known as “the Master of Suspense,” Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock, who died in 1980, is considered to this day to be one of the most influential and extensively studied filmmakers in the history of the art. He directed over 50 feature films in a career spanning five decades and received a total of 46 Oscar nominations, winning six. He received the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award in 1979 and was knighted in December that same year, four months before he died.
