Released just days before Christmas in 1988, director Mike Nichols’ New York-based romantic comedy, “Working Girl,” will screen on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 5 p.m. at Coronado’s Village Theatre, 820 Orange Ave, the final selection of the year in Coronado Island Film Festival’s popular Classic Movie Series.

All tickets are $10 and are on sale now at the theater box office. Early lineup is recommended for best seat selection; doors will open at 4:30 p.m.

The film stars Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver, and received Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Griffith), Best Supporting Actress (Weaver and Joan Cusack) and Best Original Song, “Let the River Run,” written and sung by Carly Simon, which went on to win.

Tess McGill (a luminous Griffith) is a secretary in the mergers and acquisitions department of a Wall Street investment firm who earned a degree in Business at night school and yearns to attain an executive position. Her uncanny head for business gets the attention of her boss, Katherine Parker (Weaver, as “the boss from hell”), who encourages Tess to share her ideas and then passes them off as her own. Harrison Ford, of course, is his usual boyishly irresistible self. Watching Tess get the best of the situation is delicious to watch and hilariously satisfying. Rotten Tomatoes called it “a buoyant corporate Cinderella story with the right cast, right story, and right director to make it all come together.”

Working closely with Vintage Cinema’s CEO Lance Alspaugh, CIFF has put together an interesting slate of movie classics for 2020, to be announced in the coming weeks and to start in January.
