Acclaimed Musicians Offer Local Preview

A flute and piano duo made up of local music faculty will be performing lyrical gems by French composer Gaubert and American composer Daniel Dorff at the library on August 7th at 6.30pm.

The Doyenne Duo have chosen Coronado to try out their musical program before embarking on a European tour. The pair have each had their share of the limelight, having been featured on televised competitions or performing alongside stars like Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli.

Considered among the finest Scottish pianists of her generation, soloist of national and international acclaim, Toni James caught the attention of UK audiences as a teenager, winning the Regional Finale of BBC television’s Young Musician of the Year Competition.

James was the youngest Scottish pianist to receive a Bachelor of Music in Performance with First Class Honors from the Royal Conservatoire, as well as the Post-Graduate Performer’s Certificate. Her performances earned top honors at the Royal Conservatoire’s Mozart Memorial Concerto Competition, Governor’s Recital Prize and Bach Prize for Piano. Appointed Assistant Professor of Music, Piano, at San Diego State University in 2015, she is regularly invited to give master classes and clinics at universities and piano schools across the country.

Flutist Pamela Vliek Martchev has played with southern California’s top orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Diego Symphony, LA Chamber Orchestra, Pacific, Pasadena, and Mainly Mozart Festival Symphonies. She has performed on the Jay Leno and Ellen shows, has played with Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, and you can see her in the Andrea Bocelli 2009 PBS Christmas Special, the Mariah Carey 2010 Christmas Special, and the movie The Soloist with the LA Philharmonic. Vliek Martchev earned her Bachelor of Music from of Manhattan School of Music.  She has taught at Mt. San Antonio College and Riverside City College, and is currently on the faculties of San Diego State University and Pt. Loma Nazarene University, and USD.
