Want your makeup done and don’t feel like going to the mall? There is an option for you just on Orange Avenue. Parking is easy and you can support a local business. Pose, a new beauty bar which opened this past September has introduced a new concept to town by combining makeup and blow outs.

Located in a room in the back of Nail Studio, Pose has a vibe of its own. Manager Christy Ward explained that owner Dennis Holland came up with the concept.

Holland has lived in Coronado for 10 years and has three daughters in high school. He noticed that his daughters would have to go to the mall if they wanted to get get a makeover or just get their makeup done for an event.

“It started because of my daughter. I did some research and found a similar concept in Dallas,” he said.

Although the original idea started out as a makeup bar Holland decided to add the blow outs to the services since that would draw a more regular clientele compared to makeup, which is mostly done for special events like galas, proms and parties.

Holland included his daughters along the way in developing the concept and even went to trade shows together. Holland, who is very artistic, designed the space which features white, green and light brown colors and an accent wall with a green foliage background and large flowers perfect to take photos. Pose has great lighting and a special ring light for customers to take photos.Pose offers its own line of high quality makeup and hair products for the services offered which are also for sale.

Originally for the makeup, Holland had thought of working with a big company. But during his research he came to realize that big companies don’t manufacture their one blend of makeup, but use private manufacturers. So he contacted those manufacturers and they created a makeup blend for Pose. Lipsticks, eyeshadows, foundation and more is on display in the center island of the beauty bar.

However, Pose’s emphasis is on services, not the products themselves. “We don’t focus on selling. We are the opposite of department stores. We sell a service. If you like the product you can buy it. There is no pressure. The research has found out that what women hate the most is the pressure to buy,” he said.

Blowouts include a wash and blow dry and style. Pose is a perfect place to get ready for an event and you don’t have to go to two different places to be ready. Stylists at Pose use Dyson and hot tools and T3 dryers.

Blowout styles are $39. Some options for kids are available, like Picture Day, for ages 10 and under are $29. Add ons include half up styles and dry styling. Also braids, deep conditioning and extensions (bring your own).

The makeup menu includes the “Selfie” - bring your own makeup and a makeup artist will get you ready ($39). “Profile Pic” is $49 and includes full face makeup with option of liquid or powder foundation, concealer, lips, cheeks, eyes and brows.

For kids 12 and under “Sweet & Sassy” offers a light touch of makeup for eyes, cheeks and lips ($20).

Special events can be planned at Pose like a birthday, bachelorette or bridal party. For those who want a one on one lesson with a makeup artist try “The Muse” package. “Portfolio” offers two blowouts a month, a free blowout on your birthday and 10 percent off merchandise and makeup applications. Gift cards are available as are many gift ideas for the upcoming holidays. Pose has already developed a loyal clientele and although the challenge is the location, the word has been spreading of this new option in town.

Holland’s daughter always heads to the beauty bar to get their hair braided before soccer games. “It’s like a good like charm,” said Holland.
