As a fine dining restaurant Peohe’s is the perfect place to go for special occasions. But did you know that Happy Hour is a less expensive alternative when you don’t want to eat a big meal but still want to get out and enjoy delicious food?

Peohe’s is nestled in the Ferry Landing and is distinguishable for its grand entrance and tropical foliage. The restaurant has been described as having a chic tropical vibe with unique decor and marine inspired colors.

For Happy Hour head over to the bar and lounge area located behind the rock wall at the entrance. The welcoming and relaxing atmosphere of the lounge is enhanced by the fountain in the rock wall and the sounds of gushing water. A few guests were sitting at the bar while some were in the comfortable chairs in the lounge area when my husband Dan and I went there on a recent Monday. Rays of sun came through the windows on this early evening giving the place a cozy atmosphere.

The Happy Hour menu is varied with mostly fish items and a few vegetarian choices. Prices range from $5 to $8. My husband Dan and I had never tried Happy Hour at Peohe’s and we were pleasantly surprised with the variety. We ordered a few different dishes to share - Pulled Pork Sliders, Kim Chee Calamari, Hawaiian Beef Skewers and Coconut Crunchy Shrimp.

Although we did not order alcoholic drinks, many choices are available. Peohe’s has an impressive wine list with a range of prices and place of origin.

Peohe’s opened in 1988 as a Pacific Rim and Polynesian restaurant and has been a place where many people have celebrated special events in their lives. As time has passed the restaurant has evolved and although it still offers some Polynesian dishes, some non-tropical ones have been woven into the menu.

Many diners who are familiar with the restaurant enjoy eating on the outdoor patio where they can see ships and small boats go by and enjoy the downtown view.

When our dishes arrived they all looked appetizing. My first bite was the Coconut Shrimp served on a bed of rice noodles. The shrimp were crispy, sweet and delicious. The Kim Chee Calamari is served alongside lightly fried and crispy slivers of veggies drizzled with a slightly sweet sauce. We detected bell pepper, zucchini and carrots. Vegetables have never tastes so good. The Kim Chee Calamari and the Coconut Crunchy Shrimp are also available on the lunch and dinner menu.

The non-seafood dishes are tasty although I personally preferred my first two dishes. The Hawaiian Beef skewers were prepared with a Hawaiian glaze and served over rice noodles. I found the beef tender and well marinated. Lastly the Pulled Pork Sliders were very filling with tender pork and cole slaw at the bottom of the bun. The dishes we tried were a good combination and felt full at the end of the meal.

Other choices on the Happy Hour menu are the Herb Steamed Artichokes which are also available on the lunch and dinner menu. Half an artichoke is served with lemon basil aioli and drawn butte. This dish sounds very tempting as does the Maui-Style Onion Rings prepared with a light tempura batter, coconut and panko with chipotle catsup. For the seafood lovers try the Lobster California Roll or Spicy Tuna Roll. If you are in the mood for fries, the Truffled Skinny Fries served with Parmesan Cheese are a good choice.

Peohe’s is currently offering Perfect Pair on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the bar and lounge area and diners can chose one dish and one drink for $10. Choose from Chorizo Shrimp & Sweet Corn Dip, Fresh Herb Goat Cheese with Tomato Coulis, Poke Stack or Steak Frites and a choose a beverage among these choices: Mango Mojito, Bottle Stella Artois, glass of Tropiche ‘Oak Cask’ Chardonnay, or a glass of Red Diamond Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our dishes were filling and delicious and the bill was $35 before the tip. This new discovery of the Happy Hour menu will lead us to the Ferry Landing and Peohe’s more often in the future.
