Lunch At Sea180º Coastal Tavern ... A Treat For All

Since Sea180º Coastal Tavern opened a few years ago it has become a favorite place to go for a meal for locals near and far. Many diners flock to the restaurant to enjoy Sunday brunch, a holiday meal, and for some Happy Hour is their favorite time to go.

I have only had dinner at Sea180º so on a recent Sunday after so many days of rain the sun was shining and our family of three headed to Sea180º for lunch to enjoy a great meal and take in the views and beautiful sunny day. Located inside Pier South Resort, Sea180º makes for a perfect venue for special events like weddings.

A big draw of the restaurant apart from its food is the beach feel and great ambience of the outdoor patio where in the evening the fire pits keep the diners warm and create a nice atmosphere.

The interior of the restaurant has a nautical/beachy decor pleasing to the eye with shells, large green bottles, rusty light fixtures and tables made of wood planks and columns made with barrels.

I remember from previous visits the desserts have been fabulous so I made a mental note to save room. The lunch menu features a variety of fish starters from Ceviche made with bay scallop, shrimp and octopus to Bacon Wrapped Taquitos made with jalapeño stuffed shrimp, applewood smoke bacon, corn tortilla, Baja-Ja slaw, lime cream, and tamarindo BBQ sauce. For those who prefer shellfish there are also choices of Baja Black Mussels served with a chicken andouille sausage and focaccia and Oysters on the Half Shell. Some of the dishes on the menu are labeled gf for gluten free, v for vegetarian, and vg for vegan to guide diners.

Soup and salad choices include IB Wedge, Strawberry Goat Cheese, Sea180º Shrimp & Crab Cobb which sounds filling, made with romaine lettuce, chilled prawns, lump crabmeat, hard-boiled egg, cherry tomato, bacon, avocado, blue cheese and Louis dressing.

Sandwiches on the menu are served with Parmesan Garlic Herb fries and range from Baja Crab Cake Po’Boy to French Dip and Cheeseburger. Cali Veggie Wrap is also a good, vegetarian choice.

Entrées have something for all palates from Shrimp Carbonara to Grass-Fed Ribeye to Pan Seared Verlasso Salmon made with blistered cherry tomatoes, cauliflower puree sugar snap pear, marble potatoes, and smoked almond romesco. I have tried this dish before and really enjoyed it.

After we ordered we took in the relaxing atmosphere. Sea180º opened in 2013 before the hotel was finished and it immediately attracted diners who were intrigued by the restaurant which was a collaboration between Chef/ Restaurateur Ken Irvine and David Cohn of Cohn Restaurant Group.

When our meal arrived we were famished. Julia and Dan had ordered a cup of Clam Chowder, which they both declared delicious, made with Yukon Gold potatoes, little neck clams, applewood smoked bacon, parsley, sweet white corn

and toasted focaccia. It was creamy with chunks of potatoes and a good balance of ingredients. I had a taste and agreed with them. I also liked the presentation which had one clam in the center and toasted strips of bread. Julia’s Imperial Grilled Cheese was served with thick cut French Bread prepared with brie, white cheddar, parmesan and fontina, tomato jam and a side of green apple arugula and Parmesan Herb Fries. Dan’s Flat Bread Margarita looked and tasted delicious, made with heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil and mozzarella; it was a great choice. This dish was served on a cutting board. My Fish & Chips made with local fish battered and fried was served with Baja-ja slaw, house tartar, malt vinegar and garlic herb fries. The fish was fresh and tasty.

Although we would usually share one dessert, this time we were tempted by the many choices and ordered one each so we could have a taste of all of them. What can I say? It was worth saving room for dessert: the Coconut Trés Leches Cake was light and refreshing, the Warm Cocoa Nib Cake, made with bacon caramel was rich and decadent and Creme Brûlée smooth and perfect. Our family enjoyed a great meal on that Sunday and we love going back often to Sea180º to try new dishes.
