Why does just the thought of ice cream bring a smile and give us a happy feeling? Is it the sugar high or just that delicious smooth and cool taste - or both?

Milk, cream and sugar and eggs are something everybody likes, and then if you add a favorite flavor to the mix, everything gets even better. Some of us have made ice cream at home with some success -and even though that’s a fun experience, it can be better not to have to do any work and just enjoy an ice cream. Over the years our family, like many in Coronado, have gone to MooTime Creamery to enjoy an ice cream. I have tried many flavors at MooTime. I recently enjoyed my chocolate and coconut ice cream and my daughter tried something different - banana and cinnamon.

On a recent Sunday, Moo Time Creamery on Orange Avenue had a constant stream of customers. Open since 1998 MooTime has brought many smiles to ice cream lovers. Coronado kids have grown up going to MooTime and I’m sure many remember their little ones wanting to sit on the cow outside for a photo.

MooTime is not just a place to get ice cream but it’s an experience itself. A gumball machine, black and white decor with red accents and chrome everywhere give the place a nostalgic feel and it’s the perfect place to indulge in a variety of treats you may not have had before. One of them is a MooPie, ice cream sandwiched between two chocolate chip cookies, or try a Mootaco, a waffle taco filled with ice cream dipped in chocolate and toppings like sprinkles, almonds or chocolate chips. If you are planning a party you can buy one of the many delicious ice cream cakes.

For those who like the old school flavors, they can try the Soda Fountain drinks like Ice Cream Sodas and Floats. Smoothies are also on the large menu overheard and are made with yogurt or sorbet and feature fun names like Pucker Moo, Mooberry Hill and Rocking Moo Berry.

I counted 28 ice cream flavors with additional Sherbets, Sorbets and Yogurts flavors. There is also an insane amount of mix-ins with something for everyone from Peppermint Patty to Twix and Cookie Dough.

A group of 20-something visitors was outside MooTime enjoying ice cream - and yes they had smiles on their faces. Brothers Vinny and Stephen Clesceri and Vinny’s girlfriend were having birthday cake ice cream and they loved their choice. Their cousin was enjoying a Moopie.

“The general consensus is that birthday cake is the best one,” said Stephen Clesceri.

Although he now lives in the Chicago area, Vinny Clesceri lived in San Diego and is familiar with MooTime. Every time he is in San Diego he goes to MooTime. “I’ve been here at least 50 times and we come here when we visit, it’s the best ice-cream in the area,” he said.

The group, who is staying in Mission Beach, drove to Coronado to get ice cream. “It’s unmatched and has different depths of flavors,” said Stephen who was eating half birthday cake and half brownie in a cup.

Itzel Fierro was at the cash register and was busy with the long line of customers. She explained that the cookies, brownies, waffle cones and dipped cones are made on site while the ice cream is handcrafted at a warehouse on Logan Avenue. Shakes are very popular as are Moopies and Sundaes.

Sundaes…where do I start? Let’s just say there are a lot of choices. If I decided to have one, it would have to be the Mississippi Mud - made with coffee ice cream layered with fudge, crushed Oreo cookies, and crushed heath bar. and topped with whipped cream chocolate sprinkles and a cherry. How can you go wrong?

One interesting fact about ice cream Sundaes is that they were invented because some criticism emerged about sinful treats, like ice cream soda, that were served on Sundays. Shop owners removed the soda from the treat and the “Ice Cream Sunday” was created. Later the name changed to Sundae.

MooTime Creamery, 1025 Orange Avenue. Hours: everyday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information log on www.mootime.com
