There’s a new App in town – the Coronado Public Art Walking Tour App!

This custom-created smartphone app maps your route and guides residents and visitors to 75 works of art throughout the island, sharing the story of each piece and naming the artist who created it.

“We wanted to create something fun that celebrates the great public art in our community, gets people outdoors in a way that does not put their health at risk, and highlights and promotes local businesses who have faced so many challenges during the COVID-19 crisis,” says Commissioner of Public Art Brad Willis.

The Walking Tour App was cleverly created by Coronado resident Joshua Tyler, grandson of Jeffrey Tyler who served for years as the Chair of the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission and as Commissioner of Public Art. As well as pins showing you where to find the art on a virtual Coronado street map, there are photographs of every piece, from sculptures and mosaics to watercolors and utility box murals!

To celebrate the launch of the app, Commissioner Willis has created a special contest with generous prizes donated by Coronado businesses. These include restaurant and retail gift certificates, salon services and products, a night in the historic mansion building at the Glorietta Bay Inn, a year-long membership to TrustedHousesitters as both a sitter and pet-owner ($189 value) and a full pass worth $175 to the Coronado Island Film Festival. Coronado Parks and Recreation are offering a round of golf for four with a cart, an eight-punch card for the Boathouse for kayaking, paddle boarding and rowing in Glorietta Bay, a one-month pass to the Community Center for the gym and pool, and four 2-hour court reservations at the Tennis Center.

To be eligible to win a prize simply download the Coronado Public Art Walking Tour App onto your smartphone by searching for Coronado Public Art on your App store. Then, take a walking tour as and when you like. Take at least three selfies at different pieces of art that you like and post them on a special Walking Tour Giveaway Facebook page, at https:// www.facebook.com/WalkingTourGiveaway.

The contest runs through the entire month of July and your entry will be included in a random drawing of winners in early August, with prizes to be collected at the Coronado Chamber of Commerce at 1125 Tenth St.

Executive Director Sue Gillingham says, “We are thrilled to be supporting this innovative project where technology meets treasure hunt to showcase our city’s stunning art and attractions.”
