The world famous gondoliers of Coronado are competing in the fourth annual United States Gondola Nationals rowing competition. The event takes place this weekend, Nov. 14 and 15 in Newport Beach, Ca. The event will welcome professional gondoliers from across the United States, who will come together to row in solo, tandem, and four-person sprints and long distance races. Representing Coronado will be Sean “Saverio” Jamieson, Eric “Enrico” Bender, Cole “Colombo” Hanson, J.R. “Giovanni” Starlin, and Al “Alfredo” Macina. In addition, Jackie “Jacquelina” Molino will be the sole woman competing in the competition.
The gondoliers of Coronado are, by reputation, the strongest in the country. Their performance in the previous U.S. Gondola Nationals (USGN) events has established them as the team to beat. In the 2014 USGN event, Coronado gondoliers took home all but one of the competition’s first place medals. Earning first place in the Tandem Sprint and second place in the Tandem Long Distance was Bender and Hanson. Bender swept the solo completion, winning first place in all three solo rowing events (sprint, distance, and slalom). While Bender and Hanson have upheld the tradition of excellence, rookies Starlin and Molino have much to prove.
The gondoliers of Coronado have been training hard to protect their position at the top. The four-person regatta is a new addition to the events of the 2015 U.S. Gondola Nationals. The team of Jamieson, Bender, Hanson and Molino have been spotted training throughout the Coronado Cays and San Diego Bay.
All of the gondoliers row professionally at The Gondola Company in Coronado.
