At this month’s Sharp Coronado Hospital Auxiliary quarterly luncheon, the Auxiliary officers presented the Coronado Hospital Foundation the first installment of their pledge to the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Expansion Project. “I am inspired by the Sharp Coronado Hospital Auxiliary’s generous leadership gift of $100,000. The volunteers truly understand how important this project is to patients and our community” said Nora Allen, Chief Development Officer of Coronado Hospital Foundation.

Since 1958, the Sharp Coronado Hospital Auxiliary has been making a difference with more than 130 men and women who generously share their time and talents with the hospital and community. The volunteers lend a hand in several areas of the hospital, including The Sewell Healthy Living Center and Villa Coronado Skilled Nursing Facility. Proceeds from their monthly vendor events, gift shop and Second Best Thrift Shop all contribute to assist the hospital in projects and programs each year.

“All members of our Auxiliary are delighted to contribute to the continuing improvement of the hospital, which is truly a jewel in Coronado’s crown” said newly installed Auxiliary President, Cathal “Irish” Flynn.

Coronado Hospital has been a lifeline to the residents and visitors of Coronado for 80 years, serving patients in need with acute, skilled nursing, emergency and intensive care. Sharp Coronado, has achieved national recognition for its excellence in providing high-quality medical services and patient-centered health care. As the most vital service they provide to the community, the Emergency Department has been identified as the area of greatest need for improvement. Opening in 2023, the revitalized Emergency and Intensive Care areas will integrate top tier clinical practices and heartfelt compassion to redefine how Emergency and Intensive Care is delivered at Sharp Coronado.

The Emergency Department will provide patient-centered care through the addition of six new private rooms for patients in their most critical time of need. The new total of 14 private rooms will offer patients and their families a healthy environment to address their immediate needs in a space dedicated to preserving their dignity and privacy.

The relocated Intensive Care Unit will feature six private patient rooms overlooking the beautiful island setting of Coronado from the hospital’s fourth floor. The rooms will be expanded to address the need of life-saving technology. Larger, private patient rooms will also accommodate care partner and family visitors. A dedicated family lounge located near their loved one will be a calming space for care partners and a private space for family to make critical health care decisions.

So far, the Sharp Coronado Hospital Foundation has successfully secured approximately half of the $12 million dollar project cost through philanthropic contributions from grateful patients and members of Coronado and its surrounding communities.
