Supervisor Kristin Gaspar will propose during Tuesday’s Board meeting exploring Learning Hubs on County Campuses to support thousands of San Diego County employees and their children with distance learning. In January, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the Supervisor’s proposal to study on-site childcare and now, during the COVID-19 pandemic, continuing to invest in San Diego families is more important than ever.

The Learning Hubs would be a partnership between the County and community-based providers for school-aged children. Possible locations would include County campuses, the County’s 33 library branches, Live Well centers and Parks and Recreation centers.

“This initiative will address two significant challenges: the critical shortage of affordable and reliable childcare and access to internet service necessary for distance learning,” Supervisor Gaspar said. “This innovative model is an opportunity for the County to quickly respond to multiple crises outside of our normal scope and responsibility and I am counting on the support of the rest of the Board with a “yes” vote during Tuesday’s meeting.”
