At 9:13 p.m. on Thursday, June13, the Police Department Communications Center received a call from a male subject stating that there was a shooting inside his home located in the 700 block of Balboa Avenue. Officers arrived and, with the assistance of the San Diego Police Department and the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, quickly established a perimeter. Officers made public address announcements into the residence and attempted to call inside the home. A short time later, a female exited the residence and officers were able to search the property and determine that the call was a hoax. The hoax is called swatting because the caller is attempting to get specialized police and equipment as a joke or retaliation. The caller typically calls from out of the area and from a telephone number that is difficult to trace. Detectives continue to investigate.
