MOAA/Navy League December 11, 2018 Dinner Meeting Press Release

The Silver Strand Chapter, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and the Coronado Navy League will hold their final dinner meeting of the 2018 season on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. at the Coronado Yacht Club, 1631 Strand Way, Coronado. The guest speaker for the event will be Russ Hanthorn, whose will talk about the history of U.S. Marine Corps forces afloat. 

Hanthorn retired from the Marine Corps in June of 1988, at the rank of Colonel, after 30-years of service. Following retirement, he served as the Naval Science Instructor, Naval JROTC Unit, Mar Vista High School. In 1995 he was asked to form and became the Senior Marine Instructor of the newly formed Marine Corps JROTC Unit, Sweetwater High School in National City. Following retirement from teaching Russ was elected to the Army and Navy Academy Board of Trustees in March 2012, the all-boys military boarding school located in Carlsbad. In August 2013 he was selected to serve as the Academy’s Head of Schools, and served consecutively as Head of Schools, Academy Chief of Staff, and Commandant of Cadets. Hanthorn holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Ohio State University, and a Master’s in Education (Med) from the University of Georgia. He is a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Carlsbad and co-chairs the annual Carlsbad Veterans Day Ceremony that is held at the Army and Navy Academy. Russ and his wife Suzanne reside in Carlsbad.  

Reservations for the dinner and event are required. Non-members are welcome. The cost is $33 per reservation if paid by check, mailed to Silver Strand Chapter MOAA, P.O. Box 180043, Coronado, CA 92178-0043 and received not later than Wednesday Dec. 5. The cost per reservation paid at the door is $35.
