Lunch Donations For Vaccination Volunteers ...

Chamber Executive Director Sue Gillingham brings WhichWich lunch boxes to support the volunteers at the new vaccination site at the Coronado Community Center. The efficiency with which the Coronado Community Center has become the latest COVID-19 vaccination site so impressed the Chamber’s ED Sue Gillingham that she wanted to find a way to support the program.

“What can we do to help?” Gillingham asked Nora Allen, Sharp Coronado Foundation Chief Development Officer.

“Food!” came the swift response. “We have 30 hungry volunteers each day!”

Acting fast, Gillingham contacted Dharmesh Patel of WhichWich Superior Sandwiches and the very same day they supplied complimentary boxed lunches with a tasty sandwich, chips and cookie to the grateful workers.

As you can see from the photograph, you would be hard pressed to find a more picturesque setting for a lunch break, looking out over the marina yachts of Glorietta Bay in the sunshine… Even Dr Anthony Fauci joined the hospital staff, albeit in cardboard cut-out form, providing a little light relief from the seriousness of the undertaking: helping vaccinate the 500,000 health workers in San Diego.

Every day this week and next, volunteers will be fed by WhichWich and Garage Buona Forchetta, now thanks to generous donations from the Rotary Club of Coronado and Coronado Chamber Members including realtors Willis Allen, Jim Nelson of Coldwell Banker West and Aileen Oya (who will be ordering lunches from Swaddee Thai and Bistro D’Asia.) Salas Home Care also joined the giving. “This is a great way to show our appreciation for the volunteers and bring business to our hard hit restaurants.”

Speaking of our restaurants, Tom Latona of High Tide Pizza & Bottle Shop has offered to supply a range of their delicious fare to show his support - having suffered through the virus himself, he knows all too well the value of good health.

The site is currently administering 250 vaccines a day, this will step up to 500 and eventually 1,000 a day so it is a major undertaking making great advances for our community.
