So that Coronado continues to be valued by visiting convention planners, the Board of Directors of Discover Coronado has extended funding through June 2022 for the artistic banner program that lines Orange Avenue. Before choosing Coronado as the site of their conference, meeting planners review the aesthetics of a city as well as its arts & culture, local shopping, restaurant offerings and walkability.

“Our entire Board supports the banner program because it helps to beautify Orange Avenue from First Street all the way to City Hall” said Discover Coronado Vice-Chair Harold Rapoza, Jr. “Throughout the year, the banners feature stunning visuals plus they recognize important Coronado events and non-profit organizations. They are greatly appreciated by our Board, convention planners and residents alike.”

Since July 2017, Discover Coronado has provided $115,000 to the City of Coronado to cover the design, production, hardware, rotation and maintenance of the banners.

Two new designs will be unveiled before summer. This December, brand new holiday banners will be installed. In spring 2020, the banners will salute the 50th anniversary of the Friends of the Coronado Public Library. Recently, the banners have showcased Lamb’s Players Theatre, the Coronado Flower Show and Coronado icon John D. Spreckels. Over 45 local artists have had their work featured on the banners. Members of the Discover Coronado Board advise the Coronado Arts Commission on the design and layout of the banners. The Coronado City Council has final approval.

Discover Coronado receives no funding from the City of Coronado. Since its inception in 2010, Discover Coronado has been self-sufficient. It is solely funded a 1% assessment paid by overnight guests at four Coronado resorts.
