The next Coronado Roundtable will be held on Friday, June 28, at 10 am. in the Winn Room of the Coronado Library. Special speaker will be Sue Gillingham of the Coronado Chamber of Commerce. She will be speaking on Coronado’s Business Climate with special emphasis on the hospitality industry.

Gillingham first came to Coronado at age 2 when her dad was an aviator based at North Island. The Navy brought her back when she married her husband, a surface officer, in 1981. Over the years, Gillingham lived all over the country and returned to Coronado in 1999 with her own family.

Her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Tufts University in Boston was augmented by a master’s degree in business from USC and a master’s level certificate in nonprofit leadership from the University of San Diego.

Gillingham’s career began in San Diego at General Dynamics in the finance department in 1978 and spanned 25 years in corporate America. She had the opportunity to work not only in finance but in marketing, account management, program management, information technology and executive leadership development – her favorite position. During a business downturn, Gillingham chose a layoff rather than take a position traveling full time as she had young children.

Taking a break from the corporate world, she ended up managing the transformation of one of Coronado’s worst eyesores – the old Trant Manor became the 1906 Lodge, across from the post office. After getting the hotel up and running, she turned to hospitality consulting which included helping the old Village Inn become the Hotel Marisol on Park Place. When the Chamber of Commerce Executive Director position was open in 2015, she eagerly took the leap into yet another career. The main attraction of the job was the opportunity to give back to the community by helping its businesses succeed.

She is married to Dave Gillingham, owner of Coronado Island Realty. They have two children, Kate and Andy, a new granddaughter named Poppy, and a rescue pup named Abby.

The Coronado Roundtable is open to all; come early and greet your neighbors.
