Q: City of Coronado sales tax revenues are either flat or down from previous levels, depending on the comparison used. What steps, if any, should the City Council take to help local businesses and by extension, increase the city’s sales tax revenue?

A: It is unclear as to if or why the sales tax revenues are either flat or down. However the question of how we can assist our Coronado businesses is always timely and important.

While the responsibility to build a successful business is primarily one that rests with the business owner there are some things that the City can do to assist. Establishing an attractive downtown with ample parking with traffic that moves smoothly is of paramount importance.

Improvements in the appearance of the median would add to the proper ambiance of the downtown.

In very special cases a limited partnership with the City is appropriate, such as the movie theatre and possibly for a viable use of Cora Mart. The future of the long vacant and unsightly Cora Mart is constantly changing depending on the source of the information. As of late it is either a extension of Vons or a craft-mart. Whatever its future, it has been an eye-sore for too long and it’s possibly time for a joint City and private enterprise venture.

The City can also incentivize business owners to improve their storefronts so we don’t have another Cora Mart lingering in our downtown.

It is clear that while the City can make every effort to assist the business owners, the primary responsibility and decisions on how to attract customers is the duty and up to the imagination of the business-owners as it should be.
