School Board Candidate Lisa Meglioli

Coronado School Board Candidate Question #1

This week is your introductory piece … your “elevator pitch” if you will … “Why did you decide to run for the Coronado School Board, and what do you offer that sets you apart from the other candidates?”

As a mom of 5 kids, my youngest being in 6th grade, I have a personal interest in the education of our schools in our community. Being so family oriented, I have always placed a high priority on education and believe it’s of utmost importance for our children as they are our future leaders. During these past few challenging years, I became more aware and informed of everything that was going on in our educational system and it really struck a chord with me. I opted to get more involved as I couldn’t just wait and see what happened next and so I decided to take action and run for the Coronado Unified School Board. I have come to understand that today is critical for us parents to get involved more than ever in their education, personal formation and look after their overall well-being. We need to stand up and speak up for what’s best for them and I want to be that voice.

My guiding principle is that every student has a right to a high quality education and deserves a safe, happy and healthy learning environment. We are being faced with change and many challenges and I’m fully vested in protecting our children and reflecting our family community values.

I do not have any political agenda or aspirations, I am simply a mom who is very concerned about certain laws that are being passed and what is being implemented in schools and taught in classrooms.

Raising a big family, volunteering in orphanages and Make-A-Wish Foundation I believe are a strong formation in giving me skills necessary for this position: the ability to mediate, find a good compromise, face challenges and obstacles head on, achieve the best possible outcome in difficult situations, deal with and resolve unexpected fires and navigate complicated situations.

Since a young age, I have also been very involved in our family owned business which we still have and I also had the opportunity to run a small business in Little Italy, giving me the foundation to understand the ins and out of operating a business, from the administrative aspect to managing a budget, skills which are all applicable for the school board. Interestingly enough, there are 5 seats on the Coronado School board, having 5 kids I am more than aware and prepared of what it takes to mediate and reach a consensus in order to achieve the best outcome and have the best results possible, usually in short periods of time. Additionally, this is a great opportunity to be an advocate for our youth and to give back to the community.

I believe students are better served when parents and families are able to play a part in the education of their children, which is why I decided to run and get involved. As part of that objective, we need to strengthen parent-teacher communication which is vital and encourage an open dialogue. Good communication between the school board, students, parents, teachers and the community is essential, they need to be heard and taken into consideration. My other main priorities are to refocus on academics and maintaining local control in order to keep politics out of schools so that we can improve the quality and level of education in order to work towards and strive for academic excellence.

My highest motivation are my kids and believe that all children deserve the highest level of education possible in the safest environment for them. My priorities are focused on providing a transparent high academic level and the overall well-being of our students. I will be sure that students needs and parents concerns come before any outside interest or political agenda. Let’s keep Coronado thinking in Coronado schools. It would be an honor and privilege to be able to serve the students and families of Coronado in helping improve our local education system.
