Granting wishes for children suffering from life threatening illnesses is very gratifying. Three yacht clubs from Coronado have been working hard to provide approximately 15 wishes from funds raised during the first three years of this amazing event. The fourth annual committee has set an aggressive goal to help another dozen children with worthy wishes.
Sunday, April 29 beginning at 11 a.m., 150 bicycle riders will leave the Coronado Yacht Club headed toward 10 local destinations in a shotgun style start. The ride between stops is at a casual pace, with the real action starting at each destination. The course is a secret until race day, but if the past three years are any help, riders will most likely end up at the fire station, the golf course, the bay front, one or more parks and at least one eating establishment. Volunteers will time participants at each venue while they perform a physical or mental task. Times will be accumulated throughout the day with the winning team taking home bragging rights as the winner. The true winners are the kids that will get their wishes granted.
The Amazing Race committee, chaired by locals Jeff and Bev Jakus, and their army of 100 volunteers, has set a lofty goal this year. You can become a part of this rewarding experience by cheering on the riders as they twist and turn through your neighborhood and join in the after race festivities at the Coronado Yacht Club. The racers are due back at the club by 3 p.m., for a very exciting and fun filled “Final Challenge” that, rumor has, will include something to do with a race on the water.
Join fellow community members and some of our Wish Kid’s at the family friendly after race party beginning at 3 p.m., featuring entertainment by “Cool Fever,” a great meal provided by The French Gourmet, silent auction, target (raffle) auction and lively live auction spirited by Jim Shirey. Auction items include many great donations from local and national sponsors. The final challenge and the after party will take place at the Coronado Yacht Club, 1631 Strand Way. Entrance to the party, including dinner, dancing, entertainment, auctions and more is open to the public for a small donation.
