Coronado High School’s improv team gears up for another comical year.

NHS. GSA. ASB. We’re all familiar with the biggest organizations on campus, but the Improvisation (usually nicknamed “Improv”) Team remains relatively unknown to the Islander community. According to team member and CHS junior Danielle Bongiovanni, the Improv Team is a group that “makes up scenes on the spot that usually lead to laughter from the audience.”

The Improv Team, which was founded by students in 2013, is currently captained by senior Tim Baran. “Improv is a fun experience where you’ll be around fun and funny people,” he said. Matt Morris, a junior and member of the team, said that he enjoys spending time with people who share a common interest. Bongiovanni find making people laugh extremely rewarding.

Though its members are hilarious, the Improv Team isn’t playing around. This year, the talented group will be preparing to compete in several competitions. Though 2013 was the Coronado team’s first year in action, they won second place in the competitive National Comedy Theatre (NCT) tournament. Last year, the talented team beat out fourteen high schools at the NCT tournament and took home first place. In the final stages of the contest, the Islanders competed and even won rounds against professionals and improvisation coaches.

“The competitions are great,” said Morris. “The audience is always ready to laugh and it’s a great experience.” In a competition, four Coronado improvisors are pitted against four members of another school’s team. “We play games onstage and at the end of each round, the audience picks which team was better,” explained Baran.

The Improv Team is currently open to all CHS students. To get involved, express interest to any of the members: Matt Morris, Patrick Clark, Ethan Haas, Danielle Edmonds, Nicole Sollazzo, Danielle Bongiovanni and Tim Baran. Auditions are held year-round. At an audition, prospective improvisors are paired with a current member and the two play several games.

The Improv Team is one of the hidden gems of Coronado High School. “This team is full of talented students who have been able to mentor me and give me guidance on improvisation,” said sophomore Nicole Sollazzo. “I can’t wait to see what this year holds for the improv team!”
