Dear Islanders,

Welcome to a new school year! I am thrilled to be the new Editor-in-Chief of the Islander Times. After spending last year as the Features Editor, I feel prepared to take on this role and have every confidence that my staff and I will continue to consistently publish an unbiased newspaper and provide a platform for CHS students to express their opinions on current events and campus happenings.

The Islander Times’ first year in print was an eventful one. Our third-ever issue landed us a ranking among California’s top four student-produced newspapers and in April, we received a $1500 equipment grant from the California Newspaper Publishers Association. If you visited the Del Mar Fair this summer, you might have seen our newspaper on display.

My staff and I began working on our “Back to School” issue over the summer. The pages of this newspaper hold countless hours of work, as well as interviews with the Coronado Chief of Police, the CUSD superintendent and dozens of students. The staff’s dedication, preparedness and enthusiasm astounded me. I especially want to thank Creative Director Austin Linthicum, without whom this newspaper would be as aesthetically pleasing as a textbook.

After attempting tennis, spending two years in CoSA and signing up for dozens of clubs, I finally found my niche at CHS in this newspaper. I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to work on something that I love every day. This year, I’d encourage every Islander to take advantage of the opportunities that CHS has to offer. From ASB to NJROTC, there’s truly something for everyone on campus.

If you happen to find your passion in journalism, we would love to have you on our staff. We are currently accepting applications for writers, photographers and graphic designers on our website, www.islandertimes.com. We’ll be back next month with special coverage of Coronado High’s Homecoming Weekend!
