CUSD plans to delay school on four Thursdays this year for teacher training.

Students won’t have to arrive at school until 10 am on four Thursdays this year. On September 18, November 6, January 29, and March 5, preschoolers and high school seniors alike can enjoy sleeping in while their teachers participate in a partial training day.

During previous years, the district has allotted one full day for teacher training, usually on a Monday or a Friday. In light of recent budget cuts, CUSD decided to spread the same amount of minutes over four days. According to CHS Assistant Principal Stephen Abbott, this cost-cutting measure could save the district up to $100,000. “If you bring all the teachers into school for one day, then you have to add that to their contracts as an extra salary day,” he said. Cutting out two hours of instructional time for four days of the school year still allows the district to satisfy the minimum length of a school day and collect state funds based on daily attendance. “Given the budget climate, it’s just more efficient,” said Abbott.

During the two hours of training, teachers will be discussing ways to meet the requirements of the Common Core Curriculum. “This year, we also have a theme with teachers throughout the district that’s related to writing,” said Abbott. Last spring, the then-juniors completed a writing exam in which they had to use evidence to support a thesis. “That writing prompt led to a lot of comments and concerns about our students’ abilities to write with evidence,” said Abbott. The teachers will be sharing ideas related to bringing practical writing into the classroom.

This year, Coronado High will have its six-year accreditation renewed by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. “This time will be an opportunity to reflect on what we’ve been doing well since our last accreditation, as well as a time to discuss what needs to be changed and updated,” said Abbott. “The accreditation process will require that teachers spend a lot of time working together, so these late-start Thursdays are a way of getting more time without spending more money.”
