Summer is a great time to do nothing or cross out everything on your bucket list. In case you exhaust yourself doing everything you can think of (or doing nothing at all), here are some options to consider.

Find a grunion run. This one is definitely weird and kind of gross, but in case you’re bored, this’ll do the trick. A grunion is a small fish that washes up on shore in mass numbers in a giant mating ritual. This happens from March until August. You can actually hunt and capture grunion during certain time periods dictated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Otherwise, you can just watch them flop on shore. There is a grunion run prediction schedule on the Internet, including dates and times down to the minute.

Go to the Hillcrest Farmers Market! The market in Hillcrest, considered one of the best in San Diego since 1997, opens every Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and is located in the Hillcrest DMV parking lot. There are over one hundred vendors selling fruit, art, flowers, produce, organic products, and prepared food items. If you’re aiming to become a prospective vendor, heads up – the market has had a two-year waiting list for most categories for years now. However, the HFM often reserves one weekly free space for non-profit groups.

Balboa Park offers free admission to certain museums on a rotating basis for the first four Tuesdays of every month. This service is open to San Diego City & County residents, active military, and their families. This includes the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, the Japanese Friendship Garden, the San Diego Museum of Man, the San Diego Art Institute, and the San Diego Air & Space Museum, among others. The Timken Museum of Art is always free. Check out for a full schedule.

Check out Sky Zone San Diego, an indoor trampoline park in Chula Vista. It’s basically a warehouse full of trampolines. Just jumping around costs $10 for 30 minutes, and adding five dollars gets you a whole hour. $25 for two hours of jumping and sweating. This is open to all ages all week, and sessions last until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Plus, the Ultimate Dodgeball League starts up soon. Go play dodgeball with your friends, some super-intense full-grown adults, and total strangers!

Register for CUSD Summer Enrichment classes, open to grades K-12. Classes last for a week each. The first two sessions last from June 16-20 and 23-27, and cost $149. The third and final week is from June 30- July 3 and costs $109. Check out for a schedule of classes. College essay writing classes are available for 11th and 12th graders during the second and third weeks. During all three weeks, SAT prep is open to grades 9-12 and is offered for $295, and CoSA Summer Musical Theatre & Drama Camp is open to 5th-12th graders for $349.

Go on a ridiculous, spontaneous road trip without thinking about your destination. Throw some stuff in a suitcase, enough for a few days. You don’t know where you’ll end up! Bring some sleeping blankets, a cooler, popcorn, or whatever you think you might need. A tent wouldn’t hurt. Get yourself a handful of friends and a full tank of gas and start driving. Pick a destination on the way. Maybe head to Disneyland, or pitch that tent somewhere. Perhaps just cruise up the coast. Besides, if you don’t find a good place to go, you can always just drive back home and try planning instead.
