On April 5th, the CHS Sports Medicine students took their annual trip to La Cañada, California, to compete once again in the St. Francis High School Sports Medicine Competition. The stakes were high for all students, but nobody was under as much pressure as Junior Hannah Frey, who was one of three Islanders competing for the Student Athletic Trainer of the Year award, previously won by CHS Senior Juleyka Andino. Frey was working to establish a winning streak for CHS, and managed to pull through after a lengthy competition process.

In order to be considered for the position, Frey had to go through a preliminary process which would ultimately set her apart from the other students who were hoping for a chance at the award. “I had to write a paper on how being an athletic training student has impacted me as a person and submit pictures of my taping procedures,” said Frey. Her portfolio was submitted by CHS Sports Medicine Teacher and Athletic Trainer Connie Martinez and entered into the pool of dozens of other hopefuls’ portfolios from all around the country.

Frey not only had to worry about the written and practical tests at the competition, but also had to give a presentation in front of an audience and panel of judges. Frey chose a subject she was comfortable with, motorized spine boarding, and managed to give CHS a second consecutive win in the competition. Frey’s win is indeed a shining example of the quality of the CHS Sports Medicine program and the opportunities it provides to its students.
