My mother was born October 29, 1919 in New Bedford, Massachusetts and had resided in Rhode Island in Bradford, Kenyon, Wood River Junction and Carolina before spending the past 25 years in Westerly.

Mom attended Westerly High School and was a well-known waitress for many years at local restaurants including The Haversham, Morone’s, Meadowbrook Inn, and Top of the Hill. A voracious reader of books, (reading at least one each day), she last worked at the University of Rhode Island Library before retiring.

She was a proud past-president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include her five (5) children: Sandy (Bavasso) Gencarella and Victor J. Eckenroth, Jr. of Westerly, R. I.; Penny Randazzo of West Kingston, R. I.; Stephen Eckenroth of Charlestown, R. I.; and Dean K. Eckenroth, Sr. of Coronado, CA; as well as grandchildren Rich Bavasso of Stonington, CT; Michael Bavasso of Middleton, CT; Dean Eckenroth, Jr. of San Diego, CA; Brian Eckenroth of Burlington, VT; Scott and Anthony Bavasso, Alisa Viteritto, Matt Eckenroth and Christine Crandall, all of Westerly, R. I.; and Paul Smith and Grace and Amanda Eckenroth, all of Hopkinton, R. I.; as well as 11 great-grandchildren.

At a surprise 80th birthday party, surrounded by her five children, a slew of grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, Mom was amazed at what she had a hand in creating. Raised in a strict English family, she had to leave high school early for employment to help with family expenses. Years later she finished her education pursuing reading as well as writing poetry.

She was predeceased by her parents Christopher and Polly Denham; brothers Joseph, Christopher and Albert Denham; and sisters Elizabeth Hooper, Edith Anczerowski and Doris Sherman.

Mom was interred next to her sister Edith in St. Sebastian’s Cemetery, Cobblestone Road, Westerly, R. I.

Mom instilled in me a love of books, reading and the absolute need for education; while giving me the imagination and room to chase opportunities and dreams.

In loving memory,

Dean Eckenroth
