Nicholas Astrahantseff

Nick passed into everlasting life in the early morning hours of March 6, 2020. He had been in declining health since suffering a stroke in 2014. During the last four months of his life he was a resident of the Meridian at Lake San Marcos Retirement Community Memory Care. It was a happy place for him with many activities.

Rita Wack

A popular resident of Coronado for 50 years, Rita Wack, was born Sept. 1, 1933 in Decatur, Illinois. Rita’s father was the local milkman and she sometimes rode along with him in his horse and cart on his regular rounds. Rita was often in the company of her cousins who introduced her to her life-long loves of tennis and jazz music. She graduated from Decatur High School in 1951 and went to Millikin University where she majored in French and English (German minor) and graduated in 1955.

Marcus Mendolia, age 28, of San Diego, and formerly of Erie, Pennsylvania, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020. Born in Erie, March 11, 1991, he was a son of Amy Sue (Gostomski) Mendolia, of Erie, and the late Randall L. “Randy” Mendolia and dear nephew of Cynthia Mendolia.

Sherwood LeFevre Ritchie

The oldest child of Helen Elizabeth LeFevre Ritchie and Thomas Calvin Ritchie, Sherwood LeFevre Ritchie was born in Coronado during his father’s duty station there. His father was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Class of 1924. His mother was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Sherwood LeFevre of Glens Falls, New York. His sister, Harriet Davidson was born in 1936, also in Coronado, when his parents were reassigned on separate duty to Coronado.

Joseph Salim Abi-Hashim

Joseph Salim Abi-Hashim was born on Feb. 4, 1937 in Beirut, Lebanon. He had two brothers and one sister and grew up in and around Beirut, where he also graduated from the American University (AUB). After moving to Rhode Island and getting his Masters Degree, he became an attaché for the Lebanese Embassy in Washington D.C. where he met his future wife, Joy Abi-Hashim who was working at the State Department.

Although he had moved three months prior into the Coronado Retirement Village, Bill, through worldwide deployments, always considered Country Club Lane home; he and wife Susan purchased their property in 1966.

Mary T. “Mandy” Williams

Mary T. “Mandy” Williams, who passed away on Sept. 26, 2019, was born in Durban, South Africa. She attended Covent Girls High School, and started nursing school at the age of 18 at St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban. During nursing school, she qualified as a nurse at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, which is an internationally acclaimed research institution, where the first human heart transplant was ever performed in the world in 1967.

Mary Rita Hildreth Kilpatric

Mary Rita Hildreth Kilpatric, age 75, passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 22, 2019 after a long, brave battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Mary was born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania on June 9, 1944 to Edward (Ned) Hildreth and Rita McGinley Hildreth. Ned was a career Naval officer and dentist, so the family followed him to a number of naval bases, including Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba from 1948 to 1951. In 1955, while Mary’s father was on assignment in Japan, Mary’s family moved to Coronado. Mary completed seventh and eighth grades at Sacred Heart elementary school and then attended Coronado High School (CHS). Mary graduated from Coronado High School in 1962 where, among her many achievements, she was head song leader, girl of the month and was listed in the Beachcomber yearbook as a senior standout who was “best all around,” which is what she was for the rest of her life.
