Walter Ellinger

Walter Ellinger was born in Pancevo, Yugoslavia on Feb. 8, 1928 to a single mother. After the Nazi occupation of his city, Walter and the other children were sent to Austria for school and for safety. As World War II came to an end, Walter made his way back to Yugoslavia, to reunite with his mother. Upon arriving, Walter and the other ethnic Germans, were arrested by Yugoslavia’s new Communist rule. He would spend the next two and a half years in a Communist labor camp. Rather than work in the fields, Walter lied and said that he was a tractor mechanic and the other mechanics covered for him and taught him basic mechanical skills. On May Day 1948, he traded a brand new tractor to local farmer to smuggle him and five of his friends to the border. For the next three months Walter moved on foot, under cover of darkness, and finally arrived in Vienna, Austria, an American occupied zone. He located his mother, who had been released from the labor camp earlier, and spent the next three years working as a miner drilling a tunnel for a road system in Austria.
