Mary T. “Mandy” Williams

Mary T. “Mandy” Williams, who passed away on Sept. 26, 2019, was born in Durban, South Africa. She attended Covent Girls High School, and started nursing school at the age of 18 at St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban. During nursing school, she qualified as a nurse at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, which is an internationally acclaimed research institution, where the first human heart transplant was ever performed in the world in 1967.

Mary Rita Hildreth Kilpatric

Mary Rita Hildreth Kilpatric, age 75, passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 22, 2019 after a long, brave battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Mary was born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania on June 9, 1944 to Edward (Ned) Hildreth and Rita McGinley Hildreth. Ned was a career Naval officer and dentist, so the family followed him to a number of naval bases, including Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba from 1948 to 1951. In 1955, while Mary’s father was on assignment in Japan, Mary’s family moved to Coronado. Mary completed seventh and eighth grades at Sacred Heart elementary school and then attended Coronado High School (CHS). Mary graduated from Coronado High School in 1962 where, among her many achievements, she was head song leader, girl of the month and was listed in the Beachcomber yearbook as a senior standout who was “best all around,” which is what she was for the rest of her life.

Guy Morton Neely, Jr.

Mort, as he was known, died of pancreatic cancer at his home in Potomac, Maryland, on Aug. 22, 2019. He had lived in Potomac for the past 46 years with his wife, the former Adaline Blount Rowe of Wilson, North Carolina, whom he married in 1968.

Captain Henry “Grady” Perkins, Jr. died of heart failure on Aug. 18. 2019 at the age of 78. He was battling lung disease for several years and was cared for by his loving family. He will be deeply missed.

Shirley Zittrouer Bryan

Shirley was born in January 1929 in Savannah, Georgia. She moved to Atlanta when she was 7 years old. Shirley played basketball in high school and after graduating in 1945 she started her freshman year at Duke University. While at Duke she was courted by Paul Bryan, a boy she knew from her Decatur neighborhood as she had taken piano lessons from Paul’s mother. Paul was a Naval aviator who asked Shirley to tie the knot after her graduation. They were married in June 1950, embarking on a Navy career which would take them to the usual bases every few years including Evanston, Illinois, Virginia Beach, Oxnard, Monterey and finally landing in Coronado in 1962.

We will never forget the smile, the warmth and the wisdom of Mindy Williams. She vigorously and imaginatively fought the battle against ovarian cancer for almost five years, never giving in and investigating alternatives at the leading cancer facilities in Texas and California. She died peacefully at home Sunday after a heroic battle.

C. David Herring, was born on March 18, 1943 in Muncie, Indiana, to Morris and Margaret Herring. David grew up in Goshen, Indiana. He graduated from Goshen High School in 1961 and from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1965 with a B.A. In 1968, David graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington’s School of Law, with a Juris Doctorate degree, earning cum laude honors. While in law school, he was a Staff Member of the Indiana Law Journal (1967-1968) and in 1967, won the Best Brief award in the National Moot Court competition sponsored by the American Bar Association.

Hester A. Held

Hester Held was born in Washington D.C. She was the middle child of five children and the only daughter. God watched over Hester keeping her close through a difficult childhood. Her mother was ill when she was 5, so her father placed her and her four brothers in an orphanage until she was 9 years old. Hester lived with a variety of people after the orphanage. On Hester’s 16th birthday she was hit and dragged by a street car in D.C. Her injuries were serious and extensive. She was hospitalized for six months. It was God’s grace and the right doctor, who had also broken his back, who perfectly healed her without future complications.

Longtime Coronado resident Helon Oder was born Helen Elizabeth Moore to Pearl Elizabeth Moore and Fred Wilford Moore on Aug. 19, 1924, on the family farm in Dinuba, California, the youngest of four children. After a few years, the Moore family moved to a farm in Kingsburg. She spent her childhood surrounded by the burgeoning fruit industry of the San Joaquin Valley, while her father built a successful fruit growing business still operating today.
