The Coronado Public Library is hosting a special exhibition on the Wizard of Oz and the Opening Reception of Oz Con International on August 1, 2014 at 6:30pm. Admission and viewing of the exhibition is free, and a talk with slide show will be given by Angelica Carpenter, former President of the International Wizard of Oz Club, at 7:30pm in the Winn Room. A no-host wine bar will be staffed by the Friends of the Library as a fundraiser.

The exhibition will feature first editions of books by L. Frank Baum, as well as other authors such as Ruth Plumly Thompson, who carried on the Oz series after Baum’s death. Baum also wrote under several other names. Foreign translations and special editions will be displayed, along with Oz character dolls and merchandise. Original artwork from some the first illustrated Oz books will also be on exhibit. The Wizard of Oz on stage and screen will have its own display section.

The characters from the Land of Oz have taken on new life on the pages of comic books and graphic novels. As part of the exhibit, the original art of Eisner Award-winning artist Eric Shanower will also be on view, with scenes from his books featuring Oz characters such as Dorothy, the Wicked Witch, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodsman, and the Cowardly Lion. These unique items will make for an exciting exhibit.

The Coronado Public Library is also home to its own Wizard of Oz portal leading to the Children’s Library. This floor to ceiling art piece is composed of suspended glass panels, each displaying a scene from the Wizard of Oz. The artwork for the glass panels was commissioned by the Coronado Public Library from artist Brenda Smith, as part of the Library’s expansion and renovation project in 2005.

L. Frank Baum and his family would have been proud to see the commemoration of his legacy in Coronado. As Mrs. Baum wrote in 1904, “...we think Coronado the most beautiful spot in California.”

The Coronado Public Library’s Oz Con Opening Reception is the kick-off to a week-long series of Oz related programs and events in Coronado.
